Documents Required for Bike, Scooter and Car Rental in India
Document requirements vary by provider and vehicle, but a valid driving licence for the correct class and accepted government identity proof are fundamental for a self-drive rental.
Licence and identity
The person collecting and operating the vehicle should match the verified booking details. Confirm whether the provider needs originals to be shown, uploaded copies or additional address verification.
Never share more personal information than the legitimate booking and verification process requires.
Digital transport documents
Government advisories recognise eligible transport documents presented through DigiLocker or mParivahan for enforcement purposes. That does not automatically replace a rental provider’s own identity-verification requirements.
Keep phone access and battery available if relying on digital records, and carry the booking confirmation.
Check the vehicle documents
Ask how registration, insurance and PUC information can be verified for the rental vehicle. Report any mismatch before driving away.
For travel beyond the pickup city or state, confirm route permission and any additional documentation in advance.
